I Like You, Do You Like Me?! |
by Susan Roper
Do you ever feel like a kid in the candy store when you start searching through the personal ads? Boy, that is me all over! I look at all the interesting flavors and find myself saying I like that and that and that, ewwww, I don t like that! There are so many interesting varieties...uhh, people available it s just hard to know where to start. When you start weeding out the ones that really spark your interest, what do you do now? Do you send an impersonal, generic ice-breaker or shell out the membership fee and send a personal hint of interest?! I guess it depends on the amount of effort you want to put in on first contact. Some of us send the icebreakers as a feeler, something to poke at the person we are interested in, and wait to see if they stir and take the time to respond. Believe me, I am a master of this. I want to provoke the interest of the person I m poking : , but on the other hand I dont want to attract to much attention if he doesn t want to poke me back. With the icebreakers, I think a lot of people who aren t interested in the person that sent them, simply don t take the time to send a generic no thank you via a return icebreaker which is, in my opinion, very rude if you don t . With a rejection I think we are all happier if we haven t invested very much in our poking. On the other hand, I think some people like getting a personal inquiry and tend to respond more often to these types of inquiries, even if it is a no thank you . The pokee might be intrigued that you took the time to ask after them. They will feel like your not just trolling the sight hoping to land any old fish that might bite, but really look at people who you think may be compatible. Let s face it, we are going to get rejected many times in our quest for that certain someone no matter which method you use to garner the attention of someone of interest. But, I believe that the person who receives a more personal poke might be more inclined to poke back in a positive way.
